Four-star quarterback recruit Khalil Tate was one of the earlier prospects to join Arizona's 2016 class and since that time the Gardena (Calif.) Serra standout has become a big recruiter for the Wildcats himself. Over the weekend the 2016 prospect had another opportunity to work his magic as his teammate and Rivals100 prospect Brandon Burton went on a visit with Tate to see Tucson along with many other key targets.
It ended up being a big day for the Wildcats with five prospects pulling the trigger Saturday and Tate was glad to be a part of it.
"It was cool because I'm committed already," Tate told GOAZCATS.com. "Everyone who is not committed is really looking at everything and they're thinking about making the right decision and I was just going around telling them, 'you could commit and get it over with and be feeling just like me with no stress on your back.'"
Tate has already known many members of Arizona's class even before they committed and for him is good to see so many of the players he knows picking UA and considering the 'Cats as well. In addition doing his part to help Arizona land some more prospects in his class the future UA quarterback was also able to spend some time with his future coaching staff and get a better feel for what is to come in the future.
"It was kind of brief because they were trying to talk to all the recruits that committed to try and get them on board," he said. "We talked though and I was talking to coach (Tony) Dews and I talked to coach (Rod) Smith and we spent time in his office going over the playbook and some of the plays.
"So overall it was a nice weekend."
One benefit of playing in an offense that is already similar to Arizona's in high school is that Tate expects there not to be too much of an adjustment from and Xs and Os standpoint when he arrives to Tucson. For a quarterback that can be extremely important.
"It helps that we run the same offense at Serra," Tate said. "Really everything that coach Smith was telling me in his room it was translating back to what I do at Serra. The only thing that is different is the way they call their plays, but other than that it's the same sort of concepts."
Tate has really focused on becoming a leader for his high school team and he has already started the process of doing the same for his future team too. The quarterback said he took upon himself to make sure he introduced himself and spoke to as many prospects as soon as he could on the visit as soon as he arrived.
Tate hopes his continued work in the leadership area continues to translate when he arrives to Tucson for good next year.
"I take it to heart, because growing up I've always been a leader," he said. "... If there's a group of people I like to lead them in the right direction."
Tate remains one of Arizona's three four-star commits in the 2016 class going into his senior season at Serra.
