Arizona has another answer about its roster for next season as freshman guard Kobi Simmons has officially announced his intentions to enter the 2017 NBA Draft after less than one year in Tucson. The Georgia native came to Arizona as a five-star recruit and because of a suspension to Allonzo Trier he played a big role in the first part of the Wildcats' season.
His athleticism and ability to knock down shots helped keep Arizona afloat during the rough times earlier in the year, but eventually Trier's return meant less minutes on the floor and more minutes on the bench for Simmons.
His productivity took a hit and there were certainly struggles over the last month of the season, but despite averaging just 8.8 points and two assists he has decided to try his luck in the NBA.
“I have enjoyed my time at Arizona very much,” Simmons said in a statement released by Arizona. “I would like to thank my teammates, coaches and our great fans for their support and effort in making my year truly a special one.”
Sean Miller often spoke of how well Simmons was taking his decreased role during the latter part of the season, but he also understands recruiting at a high level means losing players early regardless of where they could potentially land.
“Kobi Simmons, with the support of his family, has decided to declare for the 2017 NBA Draft,” Miller said. “All of us here at Arizona thank him for his freshman season and wish him continued success as he pursues his professional career.”
Simmons is expected to sign with an agent surrendering his remaining eligibility at the college level. DraftExpress.com currently has Simmons projected as the 51st pick in its latest mock draft, which would make him a second-round selection.
The freshman joins Lauri Markkanen as the two UA players from this year's team to announce their intentions to leave school early. Chance Comanche is also expected to enter his name in the NBA Draft, but he is not expected to sign with an agent at this time.
Underclassmen have to declare for the draft by April 23 and have until May 24 to withdraw their name as long as they have not signed an agent.
