Every summer there tends to be prospects who will emerge and become a priority for schools seemingly out of nowhere and that has been the case for one Texas-based prospect. Arizona made Andrew Jones a priority over the last week of the July evaluation period as it had a member of its coaching staff present - oftentimes Sean Miller - for his games with Nike Pro Skills.
The Wildcats just offered the three-star prospect two weeks ago, but he has quickly become one of the program's priorities in the 2016 class. It has been a big month for the Irving (Texas) MacArthur standout as he has been gaining steam with his play. Arizona is now just one of the programs making its push, but Jones has continued to try and stay focused as his star begins to shine brighter.
"I've been trying to show my leadership ability," Jones said of what he wanted to show coaches last week. "I want to show them how I lead my team on and off the court to help us get wins."
For Jones he believes it has just been about getting exposure that has made the difference in his recruitment lately as his skill set has become more accessible to see for college coaches.
"I'm just getting more of a chance to get recognized," he said. "I haven't been put on the stage these last couple years, so me being able to perform in front of all the coaches is really what helped me out."
Arizona made sure it was well represented at Jones' games last week and he has certainly felt the increased attention from the Wildcats.
"When coach Sean Miller called me and offered me it was great, and it made me feel like all my hard work has paid off," he said. "... That's a big school that has produced a lot of pros. They make it far in NCAA Tournament and they play fast. I feel that talking to the assistants and talking to coach Sean - and them being at all my games - I feel them coming on strong."
The Wildcats remain a program that Jones will continue to consider as he goes through the process.
"In terms of my recruitment they are high on my list and I'm trying to build a relationship with the coaches," Jones said. "Hopefully I can get down there and see their facilities."
Jones said Arizona wants him to take an official visit, but he said he has talk things over with his family before deciding on a date.
The next step for Jones is the schedule some visits, but after a busy month the 6-foot-4 guard wants to let things settle down before making his next move.
"We're just going to wait until everything cools down after the weekend to finalize some of those things,' Jones said of figuring out some visits.
Pittsburgh, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M and Virginia are some of the other schools on his offer list at this point in the process.
