The week before Christmas is always a good time to catch some quality high school basketball, and the premier event in the West this week will take place in Las Vegas. The 2013 Tarkanian Classic will begin Wednesday evening at Bishop Gorman High School with a solid set of games on the first night of action. The event will continue through Sunday with Friday night being a special night at the Orleans Arena.
GOAZCATS.com is planning to be in attendance at the event and here's a look at some of the prospects we will be keeping an eye on.
2014
There will be two Arizona signees playing in the event with Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei start Stanley Johnson and Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep recruit Craig Victor. The pair will be playing in different brackets, so they won't be matched up but it will still be a good chance to see both prospects in action. Johnson's first game will take place Friday night when his team takes on El Cajon (Calif.) Foothills Christian at 6:30 p.m.
2015
When it comes to the next batch of recruits a couple of Arizona targets will be playing host to the tournament. Five-star big men Chase Jeter and Stephen Zimmerman will get to play on their home court for the event at Bishop Gorman, and it is always a good time seeing those two prospects go to work.
The Bishop Gorman duo split its games last weekend at the HoopHall West event in Phoenix after losing to Oak Hill on Saturday.
Fellow five-star big man Ivan Rabb, Jalen Coleman, Cheick Diallo, and Mater Dei wing Rex Pflueger are some of the other junior names to keep an eye on at the event.
2016
The 2016 class has a chance to be a real impressive one, and Arizona is already involved with a number of the top prospects in the class. One of the main recruits from the sophomore class to watch at the event will be four-star point guard Derryck Thornton from Findlay Prep. The Wildcats have been on the 2016 recruit for quite some time now and he's turning into a real priority for the 'Cats in that class.
Thornton has plenty of weapons around him, so it will be interesting to see who can challenge the ultra-talented squad from Henderson, Nev.
Some other sophomores to keep an eye on at the event include T.J. Leaf, Justin Jackson, M.J. Cage, and Terrance Ferguson of Prime Prep in Dallas, Texas.
Action at this year's Tarkanian Classic begins with Bishop Gorman taking on Lynwood, Calif., at 5 p.m. at Bishop Gorman High School. Findlay Prep and Atlanta Sports Academy will wrap up the first night of action.
