Arizona tends to pick up steam in the summer months, and while things have been moving slower this recruiting cycle, the Wildcats are once again gaining momentum to start the summer.
The latest domino to fall for UA in the 2016 class was not unexpected, but it is still a significant one for the Wildcats moving forward. Three-star linebacker Jacob Colacion decided he did not want to wait until the end of the summer like he had previously told GOAZCATS.com would be the case and committed to UA on Tuesday night.
The La Habra, California standout chose the Wildcats over offers from Boise State, Northwestern, Indiana, Illinois and many others to become Arizona's eighth commitment in the 2016 class.
"The opportunity of reserving my spot," Colacion told GOAZCATS.com about why he made an earlier decision than planned. "I didn't want somebody to sneak up and get my spot. So I wanted to take advantage while I could since I knew the school I wanted to go to."
Colacion said Arizona's staff did not pressure him into pulling the trigger early and he always felt comfortable that the Wildcats would be truthful if that spot in the class was in danger of being filled.
As it stands now Colacion has his spot with the Wildcats and he is excited to know he will play his college football in Tucson. The newest UA pledge visited his future home last month for an unofficial visit and that put things over the top in favor of the Wildcats.
"It was really important," he said of the trip. "I got what I was looking for when I went there. For me it was very important to visit the schools that offered me and tried to do that as best I could. But going to Arizona I just knew it was the right place when I was there."
Meeting Scooby Wright and getting a better feel for the coaching staff eventually helped him decide where he wanted to play next.
"Being able to be coached by coach (Jeff) Casteel is going to be a great thing," Colacion said. "Being there with Scooby Wright would be a great thing too. He's a great guy and so I'm just excited to be part of that group."
Colacion took home the linebacker MVP award at the Rivals Camp Series stop in Southern California during the spring and he has put together a solid offseason on the 7-on-7 circuit this offseason. The 6-foot-1 recruit is currently rated No. 57 overall at his position by Rivals.com.
He is now the sixth 2016 Arizona commit from the state of California.
