With the basketball season getting underway the month of December is always a big time for teams to play in events outside their normal area. When that happens there's always an opportunity for big-time high school programs to square off, and that will be the case this weekend in Glendale, Ariz. at the 2013 Spalding Hoophall Classic West.
The two-day event will take place at Grand Canyon University, and there is expected to be plenty of talent in the arena over that span. Here's a look at some of the Arizona recruits who are expected to be in attendance this weekend.
Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman
Bishop Gorman's front court duo of Stephen Zimmerman and Chase Jeter is another year older and has continued to make improvements along the way. Both big men are skilled prospects who can do a variety of things for their Gaels squad. Arizona is involved with both prospects, who are both rated as five-star recruits by Rivals.com.
Bishop Gorman will play both Friday and Saturday in this weekend's event. The Gaels will face Orange (Calif.) Lutheran on Friday at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday Bishop Gorman will face Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy at 6 p.m.
Orange (Calif.) Lutheran
While the Orange County squad features some talented hoops recruits like Rogers Printup and CJ Hankins, Orange Lutheran also has a big-time football prospect on its roster as well. Rivals100 defensive end Keisean Lucier-South also plays for the Lancers and he's expected to be in action this weekend as well.
The four-star recruit holds a football offer from Rich Rodriguez's program.
Orange Lutheran will face Bishop Gorman on Friday night.
Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei
One of the bigger games Saturday night will feature a future Wildcat and a couple of his high-profile teammates. Arizona signee Stanley Johnson along with 2015 standout Rex Pflueger and 2016 big man MJ Cage are all expected to be in action this weekend.
Pflueger has already received some interest from the Wildcats, while Cage holds an offer from Sean Miller's program.
Mater Dei only has one game in the event, but it will take on a talented team from Houston (Texas) Yates Saturday at 4 p.m.
Phoenix (Ariz.) Shadow Mountain
Finishing up the event on Saturday will be two teams from Arizona: Shadow Mountain and Tempe (Ariz.) Corona Del Sol. One name to keep an eye on from Shadow Mountain is the son of former Wildcat start Mike Bibby, Michael Bibby, Jr. The 2016 point guard continues to develop his game at his dad's former high school.
Shadow Mountain is a young squad and it could have a tough test with Corona Del Sol, which features two future Pac-12 players in Casey Benson and Connor MacDougall.
That game Saturday night is scheduled for an 8 p.m. tip.
Action at the Hoophall Classic West begins Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with a matchup between Avondale (Ariz.) Westview and Goodyear (Ariz.) Millennium.
