top-ranked Southern California put Arizona away when it counted.
Leinart threw a 29-yard touchdown to Dwayne Jarrett and White
rushed for his fourth score early in the fourth quarter as the
Trojans pulled away from the Wildcats, 42-21, in a Pac-10
Conference contest.
The Trojans (5-0, 3-0 Pac-10), who won their 27th straight game,
held just a 28-21 edge entering the fourth quarter before
Leinart found Jarrett in the end zone on a broken play for a
35-21 cushion with 12:48 to play.
The Wildcats (1-4, 0-2) marched right back down the field but
Richard Kovalcheck was intercepted by Ryan Ting at the USC 4 on
a 4th-and-2 play. A 65-yard run by Reggie Bush then set up
White's six-yard TD run, which capped the scoring with 7:59
remaining.
"(LenDale) was a warrior today," USC coach Pete Carroll said.
"He was creative and physical, and hung onto the ball. It was
obvious he was hot. We go where we need to for production."
White rushed for 179 yards on 24 carries and Bush had 14 carries
for 110 yards for the Trojans, who extended their school-record
home winning streak to 23 games. They also have won 18
consecutive conference contests.
"If there's any competition, it's how I can make Reggie better
and he can make me better," White said. "Without him there is
no me. I wouldn't trade him for anyone."
Leinart completed 26-of-40 passes for 360 yards, two TDs and one
interception for USC, which collected 724 total yards.
"The defense gave up a lot of yards," Arizona coach Mike Stoops
said. "USC is tough to stop. They're the most talented team
we'll play. They have no weaknesses on offense. They make you
do desperate things."
Jarrett had nine catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns and
Steve Smith had seven catches for 135 yards for the Trojans, who
visit No. 12 Notre Dame next week.
Kovalcheck went 16-of-25 for 181 yards, three TDs and one
interception for the Wildcats, who have lost four straight in
the series, surrendering at least 41 points in each defeat.
"We were playing hard, playing for respect," Kovalcheck said.
"I think USC was a great team and we're striving to get where
they are."
Mike Bell, the Wildcats' featured running back, was limited to
38 yards on 10 carries. Arizona was outgained on the ground,
337-64, and had the ball for exactly 14 fewer minutes.
"We have established ourselves as able to run the football,"
Carroll said. "That's a change for us. That's pretty special
stuff. It's important to us. We need to control the clock."
White scored on a one-yard run to open the scoring less than six
minutes into the contest before Kovalcheck tied the game with a
four-yard pass to Brad Wood with seven seconds left in the
first quarter.
Leinart gave USC a 14-7 halftime lead with a 22-yard TD toss to
Jarrett.
White's two-yard run made it 21-7 before Kovalcheck threw a
42-yard scoring strike to Mike Thomas midway through the third
quarter. White's third touchdown, a one-yard run, made it 28-14
before a big kickoff return by Syndric Steptoe set up a
one-yard TD pass from Kovalcheck to Gilbert Harris with 1:47 to
play in the period.
