#YESSIR, it's a simple hashtag and hours after it first broke Sunday afternoon, Arizona finally confirmed Sunday evening that it indeed had its man using Kevin Sumlin's signature saying. The 53-year-old coach will be the head man at the top of the Wildcats' football program. The nearly 30-year football coaching veteran and former Texas A&M head coach has accepted the offer from Arizona and athletic director Dave Heeke to succeed Rich Rodriguez in Tucson.
“I am humbled and honored to join the Arizona Family,” Sumlin said in a statement through the university. “With a strong foundation already in place, we will work quickly to assemble an elite coaching staff and immediately begin the work of establishing our culture, recruiting future Wildcats, and connecting with Wildcats past and present. We will win championships. We will graduate our players and they will contribute to the University in many ways while they are here. We will represent Arizona with class and pride. I want to thank President Robbins and Dave Heeke for the opportunity to be a part of something special and I cannot wait to get started.”
Sumlin, who went 51-26 at TAMU and is 86-43 overall, will be introduced at a press conference at the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. It took the Wildcats 12 days from the time it announced it was parting ways with Rodriguez on Jan. 2 to arrive at Sunday's decision.
Heeke and search firm DHR International, which assisted with the search, went through several options including Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo who was at one point a top candidate for the job only to arrive where most fans hoped the program began - with Sumlin.
“This is a tremendous day for Arizona Football and I am thrilled to welcome Kevin to our family,” said Heeke. “He is a proven winner who will have an immediate impact on not only our football program, but also on our department and University. An accomplished coach and an excellent recruiter, Kevin shares our vision and values and fits with who we are and who we want to be. His commitment to academics and to community service are a testament to his character. I have no doubt that Kevin will bring an exciting brand of football to Tucson and that championships will follow.”
Sumlin will become the first black head coach for the school's football program when he is officially introduced Tuesday.
It is believed that Sumlin will retain current interim head coach and defensive coordinator Marcel Yates on his staff. The two worked together in College Station at TAMU where Yates was the co-defensive coordinator for the Aggies in the 2012 and 2013 seasons before returning to his alma mater, Boise State, to take over the defensive coordinator duties there. He has been Arizona's defensive coordinator since 2016.
The terms of Sumlin's contract will be released Tuesday after being approved by the Arizona Board of Regents.
