A little snow wasn't going to stop 2018 quarterback prospect Kevin Doyle from making his college choice known Wednesday. A planned morning announcement was cancelled because of inclement weather, but the Washington, DC-St. John's College standout went ahead with his decision to commit on National Signing Day moving his announcement to the afternoon instead.
Either way it ended with the same result as Arizona added its second quarterback of the 2018 class with Doyle's commitment to play for Kevin Sumlin's program in Tucson.
The 6-foot-4 recruit backed away from his Michigan commitment over the weekend and both Arizona and Colorado State emerged with late offers. The Wildcats want to add another quarterback to the class to balance things out with all the runners on the roster heading into the 2018 season and Doyle will provide a passing element to the group.
Doyle finished as the player of the year in his region as named by the Washington Post, and his senior year at the Washington, DC high-profile program certainly put a cap on the strong career for the three-star prospect. His accuracy is what has stood out about him as a quarterback throughout his career and as he helped the team to its first conference title since the late 80s he ended up finishing the year completing better than 60 percent of his passes.
He had 22 touchdowns on the year as well.
His style fits into what new offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone looks for in his quarterbacks. Doyle has a quick release and is an accurate passer going down the field. He has enough elusiveness to be mobile and throw on the run while still being able to have many of those "pro style" traits that translate to any level of football.
"The thing that we're looking forward to seeing if he can develop more is performing when there is pressure on him whether in the pass rush or in big moments," Rivals.com mid-atlantic analyst Adam Friedman said of Doyle. "Those are the things we've continued to keep an eye on and an area where there's room for development."
Doyle becomes the first commitment for Arizona's new staff and will join a signing group that features a more select group of prospects including local high three-star quarterback Jamarye Joiner who committed to the Wildcats well over a year ago.
