CORONA, Calif. - Class of 2015 center Stephen Zimmerman has taken no breaks from basketball since winning a Nevada state championship with his Las Vegas (NV) Bishop Gorman high school team.
And the extra time he's been spending in the gym is definitely paying off.
While his Dream Vision AAU squad had it's fair share of struggles this past weekend, the five-star Arizona recruit dominated any and all challengers at the Compton Magic Memorial Tournament in Corona (Calif.).
The 7-foot lefty threw down too many dunks to count, stepped out and hit perimeter shots, showed his vast array of post moves and passing skills and even extended his range beyond the 3-point line.
Zimmerman said that the Dream Vision team on display at Players' Edge hadn't had much run together, and we're struggling a bit without point guard Derryck Thornton, Jr.
"We're kind of a new team and we're trying to bond together," he said.
Dream Vision found a comfort zone that was good enough to get them to the Magic Memorial championship game, but Zimmerman & Co. fell short in a 79-53 loss to 2014 wing Isaiah Bailey and Compton Magic Elite.
Zimmerman, along with teammates Namon Wright and Thornton Jr., were all just a week removed from the prestigious Adidas Nations camp in Miami, Fla., and the No.2-ranked prospect in the class of 2015 said that he had a great experience.
"I always love playing at Adidas Nations against the best players in the country," he said. "It's a great challenge and I'm always wanting to push myself."
The next stop for Zimmerman on the AAU circuit will be the Pangos All-American camp at Cabrillo high school in Long Beach (Calif.) this weekend, something that he is looking forward to participating in.
"I played there two years ago, but last year I was injured," he said. "I'm really excited because I'm a competitive person; I love to win."
When asked about any new college interest the soon-to-be junior went to his phone to check the list of schools that have him on their radar.
When asked to reiterate what he likes about potentially suiting up for UA in the future, Zimmerman began by complimenting the coaching staff.
"They have an amazing coaching staff," he said. "They're winners and always get great players."
Zimmerman used the Magic Memorial tournament to remind anyone who has forgotten why he is one of the most highly sought after 2015 recruits in the country, and come his senior year, he will most likely have his choice of any school in the country.
