Five-star point guard De'Aaron Fox had one of the standout performances of the final week of the July evaluation period when he scored 35 points against Arizona Power Black at the Las Vegas Classic last week. It was the culmination of a productive summer for the Katy (Texas) Cypress Lakes standout and it earned him an offer from Kentucky.
Still, for Fox it was about making a statement on a stage where he would be allowed to do so and the 6-foot-3 standout certainly did that in the gym at Rancho High School last week.
"I feel like I was the best player on the floor and I feel like I'm the best player in the country every time I step on the floor," Fox told GOAZCATS.com. "So I just want to go out there and prove it."
When you play as well as Fox did last week you gain some attention and while he was not certain at the time he would get an offer based off that performance the five-star recruit did pick up the offer from John Calipari's squad to add to his host of other offers. Soon enough it will be time to trim things down some and there will be plenty of programs in consideration.
One of those schools will be Arizona, which had Sean Miller and two assistants watching Fox all week long. The Wildcats have made a surge in his recruitment as of late and Fox has felt the increased attention.
"I really don't want to give anything away because I'm cutting my list down to about six or seven in about two weeks or maybe less than two weeks," Fox said. "I don't want to say anything that puts anybody ahead of anybody, but they've made it a priority to try and get me. I don't want to say too much."
Because programs like Arizona and others out West have been involved with him for so long the Wildcats are one program he has kept an eye on.
"Not even them but the whole Pac-12 in general put out great guards into the league that excel," Fox said. "Arizona is putting guys in the league like Stanley (Johnson) and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Aaron Gordon. He (Miller) does nothing but win. They get to the Elite Eight every year, so he gets players to league and he wins while doing it."
Paying close attention to how schools have used other player in similar positions is something Fox continues to look at with his options.
"You don't want to go somewhere expecting to be a one-and-done but that coach has never had a one-and-done kid," Fox said. "You don't want to be there and be the first guy. If it's never happened in history there's a small percent chance you can do it.
"That's why everyone wants to go to Kentucky, they want to be a one-and-done. I watch that stuff. I really think about stuff, I analyze the game and analyze what the coach does and analyze what they've done the last 10 years and stuff like that. It's great knowing what I'm coming in to."
As Fox nears a cut down with his list he knows what factors will play into that part of his decision and the programs that he will eventually choose from share some common traits.
"Every school that's going to be on my list they win," Fox said. "The last three years every school on my list they've been at least a top-four team going into the NCAA tournament. They put guys into the league and I just want to go to a great situation where I can excel and try to take my talents to the NBA."
Right now Fox's plan is commit to a school around his birthday, Dec. 20.
