AD Byrne: UNLV game 'likely' to be moved to Glendale
The Arizona football team's favorable 2013 schedule may get a little more pleasing in the near future.
Almost a full week ago, UNLV athletic director Jim Livengood told a pair of Las Vegas newspapers that the Rebels were considering moving their Sept. 7 contest to University of Phoenix Stadium - home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals - in Glendale, Ariz. Livengood went as far as to tell the Las Vegas Sun that a deal could be finalized early this week.
Then, Livengood, a former Arizona athletic director, stepped down from his position at UNLV on Wednesday afternoon.
Later in the evening, however, Arizona athletic Greg Byrne said the plan would still "likely" go through.
"We haven't signed a contract yet but we wanted you to know that it is a good possibility that it will happen," Byrne wrote via his Wildcat Wednesday e-newsletter.
Byrne added that the discussion with UNLV started "a few months ago," when Livengood reached out to gauge the interest.
UNLV's return for moving a home game likely would come in the form of a guaranteed check.
If finalized, the move would give the Wildcats eight games - six at home - within the state of Arizona next season.
Arizona has already tweaked its schedule once this offseason, moving the season opener against Northern Arizona up one day to Aug. 30.
