Young recruits highlight Day 1 at Pangos

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The first day of the Pangos Sweet 16 tournament at Cabrillo High offered a wide variety of players who could end up playing their collegiate ball either at the low-major, mid-major or high-major level.

There was plenty of good basketball on display, but there was also some disappointments. GOAZCATS.com was in attendance to take in all the action.

Chandler Hutchison, 2014 G/F, Team Eastbay/Mission Viejo HS - GOAZCATS.com first noticed Hutchison back in December when he was the sixth-man on the Mission Viejo varsity squad. Hutchision is an extremely talented prospect and played his way into the starting lineup for his high school team. His AAU development is key in where he will play college ball.

The 2014 prospect had some good moments, and some moments when it looked like he shied away from the ball in Team Eastbay's 53-50 loss to Arizona Dream Team. Hutchision looks to have grown at least an inch, and maybe more from his 6-foot-5 frame to a legitimate 6-feet-6.

While playing high school ball, Hutchison would fourth, fifth and sometimes sixth-fiddle on a loaded team, and it seems like he has carried that mindset over to AAU season, even though he is clearly the most talented player on his team.

Hutchison has a great frame with long arms and skill to boot. He possesses a great mid-range game and good touch and solid footwork in the paint. Where he needs to improve is with his ball-handling, 3-point shooting and aggressiveness. Hutchision could be a deadly point-forward prospect with those improvements.

Lonzo Ball, 2016 PG, QJZ Elite/Chino Hills HS - Lonzo Ball might have been the best player in the gym on Friday night. The 6-foot-3 true point guard did a little bit of everything in leading his QJZ team to a 74-73 over a Tyler Dorsey and Daniel Hamilton-less Belmont Shore squad.

Ball played well against every defender that was in his path. Whether it was hitting three's from well beyond the 3-point line, penetrating and finding the open man or finding a teammate down the floor with a long lead-pass, Ball did it all.

Ball has a great handle and is a very high IQ player - he always seems to make the right play. He could benefit from adding a bit of weight to his frame, but remember he is only a 2016 and there's plenty of time for him to do that.

Jayce Johnson, 2016 F/C, Pangos Select 17/Mater Dei - Jayce Johnson is really young and really tall, but he is also skilled. The 6-foot-9 Johnson is still looking for a way to put all of his skill set together, but he has something that you can't teach - energy and effort.

Johnson is one of those players who gives you his all on every possession on both ends of the floor, and he can also hold his own skill-wise. The Mater Dei product has a great set of hands and can catch tough, close-quarters paint passes and finish with both hands.

Johnson is playing well above his age group, and got beat a number of times defensively, but playing against a group of 2013 players who are much stronger and more matured will bode well for Johnson in the long run. Johnson held his own defensively for the most part. He was able to pick up a couple of blocked shots and really crashed the defensive glass with a purpose.

Hutchision, Ball and Johnson are three guys to keep an eye on. Their progression this summer will dictate the number of offers they pick up, and also where those offers come from.
