Ocean View falls after dropping early lead
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif - Huntington Beach (Calif.) Ocean View played flawlessly in the first five minutes of its game Monday night against Huntington Beach, Calif.
The Seahawks were unable to sustain the early attack, dropping its nonleague game to the Oilers, 79-61, at Ocean View High.
The Seahawks, led by class of 2015 prospect Kendall Small, jumped out to a 22-6 lead on the Oilers midway through the first quarter.
The next 19 minutes, Ocean View could only watch, and hope to hang on, as Huntington began to chip away at the lead little by little.
At the end of one, the Seahawks lead 28-15.
At halftime, it was down to six, 42-36.
Heading into the fourth, 57-51.
The final eight minutes, well, that's when things got bad for Ocean View.
Huntington held Ocean View scoreless through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter.
The Oilers outscored the Seahawks 17-0 during that drought. And when Ocean View guard Jelani Jackson took the lid off the rim with a layup with three minutes to play, it was too late as Huntington had already opened a 68-59 lead.
Oilers senior guard Andrew TenBrink led all scorers with 29 points, including 17 of 20 from the free throw line.
Huntington's 6-foot-5 senior forward Harley Ruder added 25 points, including 12 in the fourth.
Small finished with a team-high 17 points, while fellow sophomore Tyler Burch finished with 15.
Ocean View will look to stay perfect in Golden West League play as it takes on Anaheim (Calif.) Loara on Wednesday.
Huntington has its sight set on knocking off Fountain Valley (Calif.) Fountain Valley High on Friday. The Barons are 17-4 on the season, including 5-0 in Sunset League play.
