Carey earns major All-American recognition
The nation's leading rusher is one award shy of calling himself a consensus All-American.
Arizona sophomore Ka'Deem Carey was named a first-team selection Thursday by both The Sporting News and Walter Camp. A selection by either the Associated Press (Dec. 11) or Football Writers' Association of America (Dec. 14) will give Carey the consensus All-American tag, and there is reason to believe he will be a unanimous choice.
The 5-10, 197-pounder has rushed for 1,757 yards and 20 touchdowns. Carey's rushing total ranks second in the nation, but his 146.4 yards per game makes him the leader for the rushing title with a meeting against second-leading rusher Stefphon Jefferson of Nevada in the Dec. 15 New Mexico Bowl still to play. Carey's 2,045 total yards from scrimmage also leads the nation.
The Tucson native ranks in the nation's top 10 in several statistical categories including total all-purpose yards (2,061, fifth) and total touchdowns (21, eighth).
Carey became the first Wildcat on offense to be named to the Walter Camp All-American team, and the first UA honoree since defensive back Antoine Cason in 2007. This marks the 11th honor in program history and 10th different player to earn the recognition.
This season, Carey also broke the school's single-game and single-season rushing records. His 366 yards against Colorado also broke the Pac-12 Conference's single-game record.
