Arizona QB Scott 'doubtful' against Colorado

Arizona quarterback Matt Scott is officially "doubtful" for Saturday's homecoming game against Colorado, the team announced Thursday afternoon.

Players and coaches are unavailable for comment after Wednesday of each week.

Scott was hit in the helmet for the third time in two weeks last Saturday in a 66-10 loss at UCLA. The fifth-year senior left the game in the third quarter and did not return.

On top of the controversy the previous week in a win over USC - when Scott remained in the game despite vomiting and delivered what proved to be the deciding touchdown before exiting - athletic director Greg Byrne announced Monday that Scott suffered a concussion against the Bruins.

Byrne said doctors would monitor Scott throughout the week before having the final say on his availability against the Buffaloes.

Head coach Rich Rodriguez added Monday that Scott could still play, if cleared by the medical staff, despite not practicing. Should the starter not play, backup quarterback B.J. Denker will likely earn his first career start.

Scott has thrown for 2,848 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing 62.7 percent of his passes this season. On the ground, he has rushed for 369 yards and four touchdowns.

Scott ranks fourth in the nation in total offense with an average of 357.4 yards per game.

In five games - mostly mop-up duty - Denker has completed 13 of 23 attempts for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Another option could be receiver Richard Morrison, who was recruited as a quarterback and competed for the backup job in spring and fall camp before remaining at receiver. Morrison also took snaps in the loss to UCLA.

It is the first time this season the Wildcats have listed any players "doubtful" - and this week there are three. Offensive lineman Chris Putton and free safety Jourdon Grandon also joined Scott, and both suffered concussions as well.

"Questionable" for a second consecutive week is fullback/defensive end Taimi Tutogi (neck), while defensive lineman Kirifi Taula was upgraded to "probable."

Ruled out are defensive end Dominique Austin (foot), wide receiver Terrence Miller (ankle) and linebacker Hank Hobson (neck). Hobson was strapped to a stretcher and carted off the field last week in the fourth quarter after collapsing while chasing down a play.

Byrne said Hobson was "in good spirits" Sunday after he was released from a Los Angeles-area hospital and flew back to Tucson. This week, Hobson rejoined his teammates and was spotted watching practice.
