Miller wants change in July recruiting calendar
Arizona head coach Sean Miller has never been one to hide his feelings about any changes he would like to see made by the NCAA.
On Monday, fresh off a five-day recruiting trip to high-profile events in Indianapolis and North Augusta, S.C., Miller voiced his displeasure about the traveling strain it puts on prospective student-athletes and their parents.
For instance, after his Oakland Soldiers AAU travel team was eliminated Saturday from the Peach Jam, five-star recruit and UA target Stanley Johnson tweeted the following day:
That's because Johnson and his team, like the rest of the field, had to book their hotels and flights for Monday. As part of a 14-tweet rant, Miller wrote that coaches and parents have no choice but to plan ahead, in case of an appearance in the finals.
Miller then followed that up with:
Miller also wrote that he "cannot comprehend" the idea behind having three five-day recruiting periods in July. He also challenged the creator of the current model "to either jump in a van with one of the travel teams for a month or follow me - this makes no sense!"
Instead, the fifth-year head coach would like to see one larger window in the range of 12 to 15 consecutive days.
Miller wrote that the window would then allow travel teams to pick and choose which tournaments to attend, and not because the "NCAA calendar forces their hand."
"Eliminates unnecessary 'dead time' & travel!" Miller added.
"If everybody needs a break then make the break 7-10 days long. But this 2, 3 day break is senseless."
Miller's remedy to the situation would be to create a panel consisting of parents of recruits who have "gone through several summers" and have enough knowledge on the matter.
Should the NCAA have any future meetings about the subject, Miller made it known that he would like to be involved.
Check out Miller's Twitter timeline for the complete rant.
