Straight off the plane from his hometown of Laguna Hills, Calif., former Arizona baseball player Rob Refsnyder caught up with GOAZCATS.com to discuss his life as a professional baseball player so far, and to reflect on last year's College World Series.
One reason Refsnyder heads back to Wildcat territory often is because of his girlfriend, Monica Drake, who is currently a swimmer at the UA.
Drake and Refsnyder shared a unique experience, both getting the opportunity in June to battle for something bigger than themselves in Omaha. Refsnyder was battling for a national championship and Drake was competing in the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Refsnyder came back with the title, keeping the South Carolina Gamecocks from their third title. Not only did the CWS Most Outstanding Player bring home the championship, but he came back to Tucson knowing he was a part of the New York Yankees organization after being drafted in the fifth round.
But, to him, the title run was the greatest high, and everything else was just "gravy" after that.
Sure enough, the Yankees' minor league affiliate Refsnyder is assigned to is the Charleston RiverDogs, which is in South Carolina.
The irony of it all is that there was a controversy surrounding tweets he posted during the CWS after being heckled by South Carolina fans, hoping he wouldn't have to ever live there.
Since being in South Carolina, Refsnyder said he realizes the college's fans are just extremely passionate and took it too far. Refsnyder said that he generalized South Carolina as a whole and has been treated great since arriving.
